FAQ

Practical Questions

Where is your office located?

My office is currently located inside of the historic Florence Book Exchange, now known as the Healing Arts Exchange. This is a temporary location until we find a more permanent location.

617 W. Palmetto StreetFlorence, SC 29501

Where should I park?

Park in the front and enter through the front door. If I have not arrived or am currently in-session, the door may be locked. If it is, I will be out shortly to greet you at the entrance.

Is your office handicap accessible?
Unfortunately, not at this time. However, we can schedule your appointments for online telehealth. The telehealth option requires a camera and audio. You will need no additional downloading or applications – only a web browser.
What else should I know about your office?

My office is a shared space, meaning that other professionals use that same space when I am not there. If meeting in person, be prepared to walk up and down a short flight of stairs to the entrance. There is a welcoming common area downstairs where you can wait for your scheduled appointment. I will meet you there at your scheduled time. If the door is locked, I will be there shortly to greet you.

Do you offer video conferencing options?

Yes. Telehealth is an option for art therapy and life coaching if you prefer not to meet in person or are too far away to travel. The cost of your session is the same regardless.

Let me know when you make your appointment, or you can choose the video session option in your online portal. You will need a camera, audio, and a web browser for all online sessions.

How long is a typical session?
Sessions generally last about 55 minutes. However, we can discuss other options to suit your needs if preferred.
How do I pay?
After your initial consultation and scheduling your first appointment, you will receive a link to an online client portal via email. This link will provide you with instructions on how to submit your payment information. This system automatically deducts payments at midnight after your scheduled session. You may also pay by cash or check before your in-person appointments.
Do you offer any discounts?

I have a limited number of reduced-rate client slots available. Please inquire during your free consultation.

Do you take insurance?

I am not in-network with any insurance companies. While I do not submit a bill to your insurance company directly, a “superbill” is available to you in your online client portal. You can submit this superbill to your insurance provider for reimbursement for any out-of-network benefits your policy covers.

Notable benefits to you as a self-pay client include the freedom to personalize your treatment and not have a diagnosis attached to your medical record.

If you have any questions about this out-of-network process, please call your insurance company.

How do I schedule appointments?

You can follow this link to schedule your free consultation now. After your initial consultation, you can schedule your appointments in your online client portal or during your sessions. You can also call me at (843) 900-0242. If I don’t answer, please leave me a message so I can call you back.

Do you have a cancellation policy?

If you cannot attend a scheduled session for any reason, you must cancel or reschedule at least 24 hours beforehand. If you cancel or reschedule within 24 hours of your appointment, I will charge you the full rate of the session. This policy includes all appointment types, including groups.

I do understand life happens, so this policy applies to me as well: If for any unfortunate reason, I have to reschedule your session without giving you at least 24 hours’ notice, your next session is free.

Art Therapy Questions

What is art therapy?

Art therapy facilitates a visual conversation between the art therapist and the art therapy client. Sometimes, art is about expressing something non-verbal. Other times, the art-making and imagery physically create distance so that the artist can finally let go.

The art-making process and imagery inform the art therapist on what and how to ask questions that hopefully lead to insight for the client.

In my process as an art therapist, I also utilize other modalities and theories that inform how I work with my clients. These modalities include Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, mindfulness, energy-based healing, and movement therapy (yoga).

Every person holds experiences and environmental, cultural, and biological factors that inform who they are and how they fit in their world. This viewpoint also means that there is no one way for someone to heal. Awareness of many different approaches to healing strengthens the process and encourages a path that is as unique as the person. As with any form of healing, art therapy is what you make of it.

If you are looking for a traditional definition, “Art therapy is an integrative mental health and human services profession that enriches the lives of individuals, families, and communities through active art-making, creative process, applied psychological theory, and human experience within a psychotherapeutic relationship.”

Do I need to be an artist to do art therapy?

You do not need any skill, talent, or practice to engage in art therapy. Art therapy is not about the aesthetics of your art – it’s about the meaning, thought, emotion, and action behind it and where it may lead. It is a judgment-free zone.

So, no, you do not need to view yourself as an artist, but you should know that I see you as an artist. I believe that anyone who creates something that wouldn’t otherwise exist is an artist.

Can't I skip therapy and move on with my life?

Sure, but I have a question for you. How’s that been going for you so far?

What you’ve been doing hasn’t been working. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be here searching for something to help. So, let’s try healing first and see where it takes you.

Life Coaching Questions

What is life coaching?

Life coaching is a partnership between the life coach and client who collaboratively create goals and plans to meet those goals. As a life coach, I help my clients through reflective listening, compassionate questioning, and accountable creativity. We get to the root of motivation to cultivate the energy needed to achieve the goals my clients create.

Client goals can include a variety of topics, from long-term dreams or short-term plans. We don’t dive into your family history or trauma in the coaching relationship. Instead, we focus on current habits and routines to strengthen the future path. Generally, but not always, the focus is on a specific and time-based outcome.

What is a typical life-coaching session?

Sessions are generally 55 minutes, and I tend to work a lot on self-care routines with my clients, but below I will outline a typical life-coaching session.

  1. The client comes prepared with 1-3 topics to focus on.
  2. The session begins with a check-in on any previous session goals.
  3. Previous achievements are celebrated and any unmet goals are re-evaluated with growth strategies.
  4. New goals are discussed. Sometimes there is a specific outcome for the end of the session. Other times, the session is spent strategizing and setting up a plan for goals outside of session.
  5. There is a mid-point check to makes sure the client is on track for her desired outcome. We move through topics until the end of the session.
  6. At the end of the session, goals and outcomes are reviewed and the client leaves with a plan in hand for current goals.

**Longer sessions may be required planning for bigger, long-term goals to be broken down into smaller, more manageable steps.

Yoga Questions

What is 'body confident' yoga?

I created this yoga term that focuses on mental health and confidence. I met many women intimidated by even the thought of joining a yoga studio for the first time and not knowing what to do. I have also come across many women who joined their first yoga class only to be confused and ashamed when they leave.

Yoga has a ton of specific language and terms we are unfamiliar with in the western hemisphere. It is intimidating, and it makes sense that women might fear joining a class for the first time.

I help my clients gain the confidence they need in their bodies to join other yoga classes. I don’t mean this as an extended service but rather a short-term process for women to get to know yogic terms and postures in a way that feels good for them. There is no shame in trying something new, but I don’t want anyone feeling unworthy of yoga’s benefits.

Yoga for body confidence offers a solution to the community of women intimidated to try yoga in the public eye. My clients practice yoga with me, learning about their body, mind, yoga terms, and poses so that they may later join the local yoga community in confidence.

General Questions

How do I know that art therapy or life coaching will work for me?

Take a deep breath. No really. Take a deep breath. You don’t. I can’t guarantee that art therapy or life coaching will make any difference in your life because I don’t know the depth of your commitment.

But the moment you take action on the commitment to making changes in your life, things within and around you begin to shift. One of the main concepts I work on with clients is acceptance. You cannot know that something will work until you try it. However, the way you approach your sessions, the energy you bring, and understanding your motivation for doing it will make ALL the difference in your life and our sessions together.

What you put into it is what you get out of it, and you’ll know if it’s working because the process will become more challenging and probably even emotionally painful. I’ll be with you every step of the way.

How do I know you are the right therapist or coach for me?

First, re-read that last FAQ. I can’t guarantee that I am the right fit for you. But we can chat in a free consultation so that you can decide for yourself. And since we’re on this topic, if a therapist or any other helping professional “can guarantee” any outcome for you, run.

Who is your ideal client?

If you got this far and found this question, I would be willing to bet that you are my ideal client. My ideal client is ready and willing to take on the challenge of making changes in their life. Potential clients who come to me wanting to change other people in their lives probably aren’t ready to make this kind of commitment to themselves.

This kind of healing takes determination and commitment. There will be mountains to climb, valleys to wade through, and peaks to claim along the journey. I’ll be here to tackle all of it with you, cheering you on and celebrating your achievements.

How do you view your clients?

I see my clients as human beings. Imperfect. Worthy. Enough. And, above all, wholly beautiful (that’s right, my clients inspired my business name).

My clients are determined, resilient, and confident but may not be aware of their power. I help them reconnect with these parts of themselves and accept the existing imperfections in them and all people.

I view my clients as the experts in their own lives and responsible for the direction in which they move. I provide information and resources, and my clients decide what to do with them.
